From the ‘did you know?’ file… Popular theory holds that ‘nerd’ was originally spelled ‘knurd’ which is ‘drunk’ backwards. Hence, ‘knurds’ were people who stayed in to study on weekends while others went out to get drunk. In 1950, Dr. Seuess first coined the spelling ‘nerd’ as the name of a creature in his book If I Ran the Zoo.
