Day 17: Namche Again
Route: Khumjung (3790 meters) ➔ Namche Bazaar (3366 meters)
Distance: 3 km (estimated)
Total Distance: 109.34 km
Time: 1 hour (estimated)
We set off mid morning with one thing in mind. The Khumjung Monastery is also home to a yeti scalp. Yes, a yeti scalp. We tried in vain to see this, but the caretaking monks were gone somewhere and the monastery closed. I did find the following picture on the internet:
Saddened, we continued the short route back to Namche Bazaar going past the Syangboche Airstrip, a haggard strip of relatively flat grass that can land a plane or helicopter. One of the highest airstrips in the world.
Back in Namche, we were given the exact same room, 501, at Hotel de Base Camp.
In the evening we found our way to probably the towns only bar. We met several groups of hikers on their way down including Bob, Dan, and Pat all from Colorado. The three had been on a lofty expedition way north near the Tibet border extreme skiing some untouched land. They had taken a large group of porters and yaks with them and had many stories to tell, plus Bob sprung and bought the drinks for the entire bar the whole night.
Note: Route times, elevations, and distances covered above are as measured by my GPS. Some measurements are estimated, that is I didn’t use the GPS that day, and will be noted as such.
