Waterfalls & Mountains
I had an enjoyable weekend spent outdoors. Saturday, Matteo and I journeyed to a small town called Ajimu. I tore a sheet out of the paper highlighting a selection of waterfalls, caves, and gorges for your summer enjoyment and this one is very close to us.
The waterfall at Ajimu, called Higashia, is Oita’s tallest at over 80 meters. After a short walk along small stream carved in the rock, the fall appears and emptys into a large, deep pool. The dark green water was refreshingly cool and perfect to swim in on a hot day.
Surprisingly we were the only ones swimming by the fall. The Japanese gave us looks of amusement or ones that conveyed extreme danger. One little girl even said, “Daddy, I want to jump in with the gaijin!”
Notice me very small at the bottom of the waterfall!
Sunday I hopped a bus to Yufudake, the famous mountain near the onsen resort town of Yufuin. I took my video camera with me and got lots of good footage during my 3.5 hour jaunt.
When I got back to Beppu I enjoyed some yakiniku at a new restaurant I found. A good way to end the weekend!
