Monkeys of All Types

My friend Steve and I met up again, this time in and around Beppu. We were joined by Steve’s sister and her friend on the end of their brief travels in Japan. Add a couple more friends and we had quite the entourage.

The weekend’s hot and humid weather is a far cry from today’s constant downpour of rain.

On Saturday we were able to visit Takasaki Yama, otherwise known as Monkey Mountian, where hundreds of macaques spend their time roaming about. After that we headed to Lake Kagurame to view some fields of iris flowers. The lake was dried up and the flowers looked a bit weathered, but the expanse of purple and white blossoms still made for a good afternoon. We topped the evening off with a dip in an onsen.

On Sunday we headed to Sumiyoshihama Beach in Kitsuki. My first visit to that beach and probably the best one in the area. Everyone got packed and situated before heading off in various directions. I was a bit tired by the end- a good sign it was a fun weekend!
